Work Triangle A

The Kitchen Triangle works!

When at home, a substantial amount of my time is spent in the kitchen, and it is probably the most used room in my house, as it is for most people. Having a kitchen which works efficiently is so important in having a happy life at home.

Work Triangle 1One of the most researched topic in kitchen design is the kitchen work triangle. And it works! It is based on placing the three most common work sites at their ergonomic best and to minimize traffic within the zone. The three main components are:
• The refrigerator: cold storage
• The sink: cleaning/preparation
• The stove: cooking

If these three are too far away from each other one wastes a lot of steps while preparing a meal. If they are too close to each other one will have a cramped kitchen.

While designing kitchens, I usually keep the following basics in mind:

• Each leg of the triangle should be between 4 and 9 feet
• The total of all three legs should be between 12 and 26 feet
• No obstructions (cabinets, islands, etc.) should intersect a leg of the work triangle
• Household traffic should not flow through the work triangle
